To mark International Women's Day, ElanFrantoio presents the national première of BAGLADY, as part of an event promoted by Fucecchio City Council focusing on the theme of violence against women.
Translated from English and directed by Firenza Guidi from the original pièce of contemporary Irish playwright Frank McGuinness, BAGLADY is a dramatic monologue written in 1985 and based on a true story of solitude, alienation and self-denial, often the result of repeated violence and abuse.
Through the voice of the protagonist - interpreted by Laura Bencini - Firenza Guidi chooses McGuinness's text to enter tentatively and explore the world of domestic violence. Wading through the tramp heroine's past of pain and ill-treatment, Guidi tries to read domestic violence's language and secret grammar, staring at that subtle line that separates sanity from delusion and wondering whether negation might not be the only way this woman could survive.
